MBSR is a tried and tested method developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn and used successfully for a wide range of patients in a hospital setting within the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre, USA for over 30 years. Stress is implicated in the majority of diseases and it is therefore not surprising that scientific evidence is continuing to prove MBSR beneficial for a variety of conditions. Positive changes have been reported in the brain and immune system in a corporate group following an 8-week course of MBSR. The participants were given a ‘flu vaccination at the end of the course and the antibody response measured. Greater changes in the brain observed using EEG, correlated with a larger antibody response to the ‘flu vaccination. A preliminary study by Jon Kabat-Zinn and colleagues demonstrated a significantly improved response to the treatment of psoriasis in patients undergoing MBSR. Changes were produced at the genetic level of cell proliferation with exciting implications therefore for future research on the effect of MBSR on diseases such as cancer.

Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
Taken together with observational studies of patients completing the 8-week MBSR programme over the last 30 years this is a very promising and exciting area. It is important that in parallel with ongoing research, carefully trained teachers continue to deliver this important intervention, increasing accessibility for all ages worldwide.
